A new Reader for Holy Trinity!
This Sunday evening at Southwark Cathedral Jan Greaves will be licensed as a Reader in the Southwark Diocese. Thanks be to God!
This comes at the end of an initial selection process and then 3 years of training for Jan. She has held down her job at St Bede's School and been active at Holy Trinity (particularly at Timperley Church), alongside the academic work, placements and the weekly trip up to Southwark to receive her training.
It has been a great joy to supervise Jan over this period - I have enjoyed discussing her placements and her essays and answering her particular questions about why we do things the way we do at HT (or don't do them!). Jan has a keen theological mind and a passion for Jesus that will be a great asset to us as she begins this new chapter of ministry.
If you are wondering what a Reader is, then see this quote from the C of E website:
"Readers are lay people who have been selected, trained and licensed by the Bishop of a diocese to preach, teach and lead worship in a pastoral context. There are more than 10,000 active Readers in the Church of England. Most are licensed to a parish but some are chaplains in prisons, hospitals, hospices or schools, a few are in charge of parishes."
You could also talk to of the other Readers at Holy Trinity - Ray Nash, David Storer or Trevor Watts.
Jan plans to continue exercising her ministry across Holy Trinity and Timperley Church, and we look forward to a formal commissioning of her in the services here at Holy Trinity in coming weeks.
If you would like to attend the service at the Cathedral on Sunday evening you are welcome to do so - the service begins at 6.00pm, and it is open to the public without tickets.
If you can't make it to the cathedral we shall be praying for Jan here at our Sunday@7 service.
Congratulations to Jan, and to Paul, Katie and Tom!
